fashion revolution
On April 24th 2013 the world's deadliest clothing factory accident injured over 2,000 garment workers and killed 1,138 people.
Over 1,000 people died, but their deaths gave birth to a Fashion Revolution.
This tragedy also inspired many to do better by making changes in our daily lives.

This tragedy also inspired many to do better by making changes in our daily lives.
The deadly Rana Plaza factory collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh was a wake up call. Designer Jesse Junko Beardslee decided then and there to focus on creating fashion with locally sourced sustainable materials to add ethical ready to wear to her custom design offerings.

Where our clothes are made and by whom matters. Garment workers overseas are often in exploitative and dangerous work environments using environmentally harmful materials and methods in unregulated factories. By being curious and asking "Who Made My Clothes" we can help untangle this mess.

FIGHT WASTE
Fighting for recycling can feel like an uphill, thankless battle. But like any other exercise in responsibility you've got to do it for the cause, not the applause! On average Americans throw away 80 pounds of fabric every year,
not donates,
throws away.
There are so many reasons you should never throw fabric items away. There are also so many solutions, even for clothing and fibers you wouldn't think anyone would ever want! Fashion Revolution Week 2019 we partnered with Blue Jeans Go Green and Habitat for Humanity for a Denim Drive showcasing the denim recycling process we can all participate in! Fight with Fashion by recycling your clothing/fabric/fiber waste.

Host a Clothing Swap
Donate your unwanted clothing, fabric and other fiber goods.
(Anything that isn't wet or dirty can be sorted and used as fiber fill and rags - even that lone holey sock! Check first, but many places sort and sell textile waste to be used for things like vehicle seats. Thrifty Shopper here in New York State accepts textile waste.)
Recycle your old jeans into denim insulation
We organized a Fashion Revolution Week Denim Drive that diverted over HALF A TON of denim from the landfill just in our local community!
Create Eco Bricks with any bits of unrecyclable thread, fabric or waste!
This is a project we participate in to repurpose our thread and fabric scraps from the sewing studio.
Make paper
Upcycle existing garments!

fight corruption
Fighting for justice means so much to so many but the $2.5 TRILLION fashion industry has long offended the planet and humanity with rampant unregulation and vulgar toxicity. From the greedy, greasy profiteers who knowingly exploit women and children,
(40 million people live in modern slavery today)
to the miserly masters letting the environment pick up the bill so their bottom line doesn't suffer, the fashion industry's "business as usual" means people and planet suffer at the cost of doing business.
In this capitalist democracy rife with oligarchs and archaic systems, let's meet them where they are and fight with justice.

To change systems that pollute, enslave, underrepresent and disempower we need to acknowledge these injustices and shine light on the darkest corners. International textile and garment manufacturing supply chains separate Westernized people from destitute indigenous/people of color working in factories a world away. In many ways poor white people are pitted against poor brown people in this complex and cruel system, which generated around $300 billion in 2020 globally. Women and children have a long history of running the fashion and textile industries for menial pay while men collect the profits. Gendered wage disparity hardly matters when
over 80% of all garment workers are female; And fashion trails only tech in being the world's most enslaving industry.

New York State's Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act
has the power to not just affect New York but our entire country and the global industry as it refers to any large ($100 million annual revenue) fashion businesses working within the state - a global fashion capitol. Retailers and manufacturers will be held responsible for disclosing environmental accounting, supply chain information, labor safety due diligence, set and achieve science based targets regarding climate change and identify and plan mitigation of risks publicly or face fines and acknowledgment of their failures.
